Ngamba Island is part of Koome archipelago on Lake Victoria 23km south of Entebbe, Uganda. It Consists of approximately 100 acre, 95 of which are forested and separated from the visitors area by an electric fence. Ngamba Island was officially opened in 1999 and is currently home to 39 orphaned Chimpanzees. Have a chimpanzee encounter and make a difference to the lives of chimpanzees. Itinerary
After a short briefing by Openafrique Safari guide, you will be driven to the shores of Lake Victoria to meet your 9.00am launch. which takes about 45 minutes. Arrive at the island for a short briefing and introduction, shortly it will be time for feeding, hear an informative talk by sanctuary staff, and enjoy kayaking and swimming on the equator, viewing a neighboring fishing village, fantastic bird watching and other wildlife encounters or just sunbathe and relax. Overnight excursions: Staying in an East Africa style tented camp on the island with each of the four tents overlooking the lake and accommodating two persons in comfort with, en-suite bathroom facilities and solar lighting
There are optional special activity programs available whilst there overnight which include;
Forest Walk; Wake up for the forest walk where you will interact with the young group aged between 4-7 years old. During the forest walk this juvenile may climb all over you, and normally many at the same time may expect you to carry them, so be ready for this state of great excitement.
Integration program; Integrating the orphaned chimpanzees into one community. The integration of the new arrivals to the group is a continuous progress as the rescued animals have been arriving at different times from the time the sanctuary was established in 1998. The time that it takes to integrate any of the chimpanzees to the community depends on different factors including age, sex, level of trauma experienced, how long the individual lived in capacity before coming to the sanctuary among othersThe integration program are done in three phases; getting the new arrivals used to the new environment in the indoor facility on arrival, getting them integrated with the others in smaller groups in the outside enclosure and finally in the main forest with the rest of the group.
Caregiver for the day: This is a unique program where you get the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a chimpanzee caregiver by being a caregiver your self. you will get the opportunity to not only view the chimps feeding, but to participate in preparing their food and feeding them
In the afternoon board your boat back to the main land where you will meet your guide for your drive back to Kampala /Entebbe where the Safari ends.
